Back to the walking today following the path that led close to the sea, beach, and marshes. Lots of other people were out, more than I expected on a Tuesday. Many of them were walking their dogs and enjoying the day without rain. The day was warm and fortunately it was also quite windy so we were comfortable enough. The route was very flat, the biggest hill we had was a few sand dunes, perhaps 10-15 ft high.
She Said:
Our driver
brought us to Burnham Overy Staithe, where we began our walk today. We started outside The Hero Pub and Inn, the “Hero”
being Admiral Nelson, Norfolk’s favorite son.
Inns, Pubs, Shops, Beer, Sandwiches – all named after Nelson. Sheesh.
We were lucky
to have a stiff breeze today, as the temp was warm. A bit of cloud cover helped, too.
Our walk took
us through protected marshes and out onto a very wide, flat beach bordered by sand
dunes and beach grass. Quite reminiscent
of Cape Cod. Plovers were nesting. A peaceful stretch of the Path. We soon were walking along a pine wood and
enjoying sound of the rustling trees.
Some number of Day Trippers out today; more than we would have thought
for a Tuesday. Bank Holiday weekend is
coming up, so maybe folks took the added week before for an extra-long
vacation.
As happens
every year in the countryside, the RAF jets flew over today on their
maneuvers. Impressive.
We walked
into Wells-Next-The-Sea along a sea wall that lines the harbor. Very promenade-ish. A new thing seems to be old guys wearing
cargo shorts. Almost as common as
Labrador Retrievers. Wells-Next-The-Sea
is a resort town, with all kinds of touristy shops. We did like the ice cream shop, though – Vanilla
Fudge for me and Caramel Pecan for R. We
bought a couple of pretty tomatoes in a produce shop to tart up our ham
sandwiches with. R spotted a Wine Shop and,
a good bottle of Chardonnay later, we were happily waiting for Adam our driver
to pick us up and drive us to our home for the next 3 nights – The Blakeney House
B+B.
Rain is
forecast for tomorrow (Wed.) and some sprinkles are starting already. No worries, as we are snug in our excellent
room, gazing out at the gardens.
