She Said:
Goodbye to
Durham. A wonderful place for our
acclimation to the UK time zone. We saw
historic and countryside town-ish things.
The right kind of start.
A very
lovely and leisurely train trip from Durham to Burnham Market, our base for the
next 3 days. The countryside flattened
out, and the farmland here in Norfolk is so deep, dark brown and
loamy-looking. I saw many pheasant at
the fields’ edges and many swans, sitting on their massive twig nests, waiting
for their cygnets to arrive.
A couple of
easy changes (Peterborough and Ely) and we arrived at the happy village of
Burnham Market. Adam, our car service
driver for the next few days, took a little detour on the way from the train
station to our inn to show us Sandringham, the Queen’s estate (where her court
comes each Christmas). As expected, it
is quite impressive (the Stables alone cover many acres and would provide
fabulous living quarters for everyone I know!)
Our room at
The Hoste Inn is quite posh, just how I like it! R explored the village a bit, then we both
enjoyed a simple and birdsong heavy Happy Hour in our room overlooking a secret
garden. Tonight we will dine at The
Nelson Inn, as the restaurant at our Hoste Inn is fully booked and the Fish
& Chips shop in the village closed at 5.
Tomorrow, we
begin the National Trails’ Norfolk Coast Walk, our 11th long
distance walk in England.
He Said:
Today was relaxing; not much walking and a lot of sitting and/or waiting. It's late in the evening now and we are actually running the air conditioning. It's not that the weather is hot outside, the room is just hot. So we are scrambling to enter the blog post and are ready to then go to sleep after what was a delicious meal at the nearby Nelson Inn. We heard that lord Nelson was born in this area....
